A Complete Finishing Toolkit for Blender’s Compositor

Blender's compositor handles the fundamentals well—but it stops short of the optical imperfections and finishing tools that separate CG from photorealism.

There's no mist filtration. No aperture diffraction. No per-channel grain control or film halation. The chromatic aberration options are limited. And piecing together workarounds for each effect costs hours you don't have.

Real lenses diffuse light before it hits the sensor. Apertures create structured diffraction patterns, not uniform glows. Film emulsions flicker, scatter light into halation, and show grain that varies by color channel.

This toolkit fills those gaps.

Optics

Tools that simulate how real glass behaves.

Mist Filter
Replicates the light diffusion of a camera mist filter applied in front of the lens. Two preset looks included. Control density and diffusion scale to match your scene's atmosphere.

Chromatic Aberration
Full control over scale, rotation, translation, and per-channel color behavior. Goes beyond both the default lens distortion node and the upcoming 5.0 implementation—giving you the precision to dial in specific lens characteristics.

Random Aberrations
Real lenses don't focus all wavelengths perfectly at the image plane. This node adds subtle optical inconsistencies that mimic those focusing errors. The result: instant realism.

Lens Distortion
Customizable distortion with layering support. Stack multiple passes to build complex, photoreal lens behavior that matches real-world glass.

Lens Flares

Real lens flares are complex optical phenomena—light scattering through multiple glass elements, creating ghosts, caustics, and chromatic dispersion. Blender's default glare node gives you streaks and basic blooms, but it can't build the layered, physically-based flares that integrate convincingly into live-action plates or high-end CG.

This toolkit gives you a modular flare system built from optical fundamentals, plus production-ready presets that deliver specific looks instantly.

ELEMENTS

Build custom flares from the ground up, or use these to enhance and modify the included presets.

Advanced Bokeh Generator
The foundation of any flare system. Generate bokeh shapes with controls for noise, aberration, and diffraction spots—creating the imperfect, organic quality of real optical elements.

Ghosts
The primary component of most lens flares. These bokeh-shaped circles or polygons form the recognizable flare pattern. Includes optical occlusion for realistic interaction with bright sources, chromatic aberration for spectral separation, and downscaling options to maintain performance on complex shots.

Rainbow Arcs
Chromatic dispersion elements that add color separation and optical complexity.

Caustic
Spiky, detailed elements that break up uniform shapes and add textural interest—mimicking light refracting through imperfect lens coatings and internal reflections.

Hotspot
An enhanced diffraction effect with full control over spike count, haziness, and diffraction intensity. Perfect for creating sharp, directional elements or soft, atmospheric glows.

PRESETS

Looks that work immediately. Every preset is fully customizable using the element controls.

Color

Film stocks designed for real finishing.

Kodak 2383
The industry-standard print stock for theatrical color timing.

Kodak E 200
Reversal film emulation with the saturation and contrast characteristics of this classic stock.

Aperture

Tools shaped by real camera physics.

Diffraction
Mimics the structured bloom created by real aperture blades. No more flat, uniform glows—this is how light actually behaves at the lens opening.

Vignette
Natural falloff control for lens edge darkening.

Image Plane

Film behaviors that digital renders usually miss.

Camera Shake
Simulates gate weave, film jitter, or handheld movement. Includes motion blur controls for realistic motion rendering.

Flicker
The frame-to-frame intensity variation inherent to film capture and projection.

Grain
Photoreal grain with per-channel scale and intensity. Blended accurately using proper compositing math. Looks real at default settings—customizable when you need control.

Halation
A film-exclusive effect where bright light scatters through the emulsion base and back into the image. Adds the glow and softness unique to celluloid.

Bonus

Instant Slap-Comp
Every essential photorealism effect pre-assembled into a single node group. Default settings are dialed in and production-ready. Fully customizable when your shot needs a specific look.

What This Gives You

A complete finishing pipeline inside Blender's compositor. The optical characteristics that make renders feel like they were shot on real glass and captured on real film. The control to match specific lenses, stocks, and looks without switching software or faking effects with workarounds.

This is the toolset Blender's compositor should have shipped with. Now it does.
